Complete ammonia oxidizers – a new pathway in the nitrification process
Target Audience
This webinar will bring together researchers, practitioners and other stakeholders focusing on nitrification, nitrogen cycling microorganisms to exchange ideas, explore applications, and disseminate new scientific knowledge.
Description
Nitrification is a critical process in wastewater treatment plants. Conventional nitrification includes two steps, in which ammonia is oxidized to nitrite by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and further nitrate by nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). The discovery of complete ammonia oxidizers (Comammox Nitrospira) has fundamentally changed our picture of conventional nitrification and pointed to complete nitrification of Nitrospira as key components of nitrogen-cycling microorganisms.
In this webinar, we will talk about the Comammox discovery and how this changes the paradigm of nitrification. We will further investigate the physiology, kinetic and metabolic properties (e.g., N2O production) of Comammox Nitrospira as well as its occurrence and significance in wastewater treatment systems. Our expert panellists will also outline a model development for comammox process as well as the potential application of comammox in nitrogen removal and pharmaceutical biodegradation.
Learning objectives
During the webinar, participants will be able to:
- To learn more about the discovery, physiology, kinetic and metabolic properties of Comammox Nitrospira;
- To enhance their understanding of the role of Comammox Nitrospira in biological nitrogen removal processes in wastewater treatment plants;
- To explore potential applications of Comammox Nitrospira in wastewater treatment and contaminant removal;
