Rethinking Wastewater Management – Circular by Design

International Water Association (IWA), EcoSan Foundation (ESF), International Centre for Clean Water (ICCW) and Greentivity Enviro Solutions
Wastewater management, Decentralised systems, Technologies

Target Audience

- Students currently pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in relevant fields such as Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Water resource management, or related disciplines
- Early-career researchers and PhD scholars in wastewater, sanitation, or urban infrastructure
- Young professionals with up to 3 years of experience in consulting, NGOs/startups, urban local bodies and utilities.

Description

India’s rapid urbanisation has resulted in a staggering increase in wastewater generation, with urban areas producing millions of litres daily. Despite the pressing need for effective wastewater management, only a small fraction is treated adequately. The reliance on centralised wastewater treatment systems has proven inadequate in bridging this treatment gap. These systems often demand substantial investments in infrastructure, energy, and operational expertise, making them financially and logistically impractical for many regions. This is where decentralised wastewater treatment systems emerge as a transformative solution.

The proposed 2-day collaborative training workshop is designed to offer an immersive, application-oriented learning experience. Through a blend of expert-led sessions, hands-on exercises, and site-based learning, the programme aims to equip participants with the practical knowledge and skills required to design, implement, and manage decentralised wastewater treatment systems.

Learning objectives

The primary objective of this program is to empower participants with practical knowledge and application-based training in DEWATS, enabling them to:

  • Understand core concepts of wastewater generation, treatment principles, and challenges in conventional sanitation systems.
  • Learn about the planning and design process for decentralised systems, including baseline data collection and feasibility assessments
  • Engage critically with policy frameworks, financing mechanisms, and stakeholder dynamics that influence the implementation of decentralised systems at scale.
